AI moving into live retail operations

Retailers are embedding AI directly into live commerce surfaces: Frasers Group launched an Ask Frasers shopping assistant and reported a 25% uplift in conversion, Shopify released an AI Toolkit for store management, and Shopee is deploying seller tools for product management and customer service ( ). These examples show vendors are linking models to operational data and actions inside live systems rather than keeping AI confined to exploratory chat (365retail.co.uk).

Retailers are starting to put artificial intelligence inside the checkout path, product search, and seller dashboard instead of leaving it in standalone chat demos. Frasers Group, Shopify, and Shopee each rolled out tools in April 2026 that connect models to live store data and store actions. (365retail.co.uk; shopify.dev; mb.com.ph) Frasers Group said on April 11 that its FRASERS website had launched “Ask Frasers,” an artificial intelligence shopping assistant built with Algolia’s Agentic Experience and external large language models. The company said early results showed sales conversion rates up 25 percent versus traditional site search. (365retail.co.uk) The assistant uses product features, stock availability, and real-time popularity signals to answer shopper questions, compare items, and narrow choices in a conversational format. Frasers placed it on the live FRASERS site after repositioning the brand from House of Fraser toward a more premium fashion and lifestyle pitch. (365retail.co.uk) Shopify made a parallel move on April 9, when it released its Shopify AI Toolkit through the company’s developer changelog. Shopify said the toolkit lets supported coding agents use Shopify documentation, application programming interface schemas, code validation, and command-line store execution to build apps and manage store operations. (shopify.dev) Shopify said the toolkit supports Claude Code, Cursor, Gemini Command Line Interface, Visual Studio Code, and Codex Command Line Interface, and that the plugin auto-updates as new capabilities ship. That means the model is not just suggesting code; it can be wired into the tools merchants and developers already use to change a live store. (shopify.dev) Shopee is pushing the same pattern from the seller side. In an April 11 case study, Manila Bulletin reported that seller New Earth, which has a six-person team, used Shopee’s Chat Artificial Intelligence Assistant to handle routine questions such as delivery updates, order status, and product availability. (mb.com.ph) Shopee has also been rolling out Product AI Optimiser in seller tools, where merchants can upload size charts and product images in bulk so the system can recommend sizes, generate improved product visuals, and show traffic and sales tied to AI-optimized listings. Shopee’s seller education hub says those inputs also help the system contribute to customer service, search recommendations, and product detail page optimization. (seller.shopee.ph) The common shift is that these systems are being attached to operational data that changes by the minute: inventory, product attributes, message queues, and store commands. In practice, that turns artificial intelligence from a search box or writing aid into software that can influence merchandising, service speed, and conversion while a store is running. (365retail.co.uk; shopify.dev; seller.shopee.ph) The pitch is different for each company, but the operating model is converging. Frasers is using artificial intelligence to steer shoppers to products, Shopify is exposing store controls to agent tools, and Shopee is using it to absorb repetitive seller work inside the marketplace itself. (365retail.co.uk; shopify.dev; mb.com.ph) That leaves retail artificial intelligence in a more concrete place than last year’s wave of demo chatbots. The new test is whether these tools keep improving measurable outcomes such as conversion, response time, and listing performance once they are embedded in the live systems that retailers already use every day.
