Pullman Announces Book of Dust Finale
Philip Pullman has announced that *The Rose Field*, the final novel in his *Book of Dust* trilogy, will be released on October 23, 2026. The book will serve as the epic conclusion to the saga of Lyra Silvertongue, connecting Pullman's new trilogy to his legendary *His Dark Materials* series. Fans can expect a highly anticipated finale that wraps up decades of storytelling in Pullman's multiverse.
*The Book of Dust* serves as an "equel" to *His Dark Materials*, expanding the narrative both before and after the original trilogy. The first installment, *La Belle Sauvage* (2017), is set ten years prior, recounting how an infant Lyra Belacqua was rescued and brought to Jordan College, Oxford. The second book, *The Secret Commonwealth* (2019), picks up twenty years after the conclusion of the original series, with Lyra as a young woman. Upon its release, *La Belle Sauvage* was a commercial success, selling 71,568 copies in its first week in the UK and going on to sell over 200,000 copies in the country. It became Philip Pullman's first-ever title to reach the number one spot on the UK Official Top 50. The book was also named the 2017 Waterstones Book of the Year. *The Secret Commonwealth* also debuted at number one in the UK, selling 54,301 copies in its first three days. It was also a #1 New York Times Bestseller. The novel was shortlisted for the Fiction Book of the Year at the 2020 British Book Awards. The final novel, *The Rose Field*, will see the converging paths of Lyra and Malcolm Polstead. Lyra is in search of her daemon, Pantalaimon, and her own lost imagination, while Malcolm seeks to find her. Their journey will take them across Europe and into the Levant, pursued by the Magisterium. The title *The Rose Field* refers not to a literal field of flowers, but to a concept akin to a magnetic or gravitational field that is connected to the nature of Dust and consciousness. Pullman has described the final installment as both a thriller and a story of psychological, moral, and emotional growth. A new and chilling threat awaits the characters, and the narrative will delve into a world aflame with fear, power, and greed. The story will also introduce Lyra's uncle, Marcel Delamare, who has risen to become the head of the Magisterium and is determined to destroy the windows between worlds. The series continues to explore complex themes, including the struggle between free thought and oppressive authority. Pullman has noted that the new trilogy is darker than *His Dark Materials*, reflecting a changed world and his own evolution as a writer. The story tackles issues of intolerant rationality versus imagination and the complexities of growing into adulthood.
