Walmart Automates Warehouses and Stores
Walmart is deploying autonomous forklifts across its distribution centers and will introduce Symbotic's AI-powered robotics to all regional distribution centers. In stores, the retailer is rolling out 60 million digital shelf-edge labels across more than 2,300 locations to automate price updates and inventory tracking. The company's strategy focuses on empowering associates with technology rather than replacing them.
- The expanded partnership with Symbotic will retrofit all 42 of Walmart's regional distribution centers with a high-density robotics platform over the next several years, an initiative that began with a pilot in a Florida distribution center in 2017. - In addition to Symbotic, Walmart has partnered with Fox Robotics, deploying 19 "FoxBot" autonomous forklifts across four distribution centers after a 16-month proof-of-concept. Walmart also invested growth capital for a minority stake in the autonomous forklift company. - The goal is for approximately 65% of Walmart's stores to be serviced by automated distribution centers by 2026, with over half of the volume in fulfillment centers already being automated. These efforts have contributed to a 20% improvement in unit cost averages. - The digital shelf labels are being supplied by VusionGroup, with the rollout to 2,300 stores slated for completion by 2026. This technology reduces the time for a price change from a two-day manual process to just a few minutes. - Walmart's investment in automation is substantial, with $14 billion allocated to supply chain automation and technology in fiscal year 2022 alone. A single distribution center in Louisiana is receiving a $330 million investment to double its shipping capacity through automation. - The company is leveraging agentic AI tools to get a unified, real-time view of inventory across its network, allowing systems to automatically detect and correct issues like a sudden surge in demand without manual intervention. - Beyond the warehouse, Walmart utilizes AI-powered chatbots from Pactum AI to automate contract negotiations with suppliers.
