The New York Jets just snagged All-Pro safety Minkah Fitzpatrick from the Dolphins and signed him to an extension [https://www.profootballrumors.com/2026/03/jets-to-acquire-minkah-fitzpatrick-from-dolphins-s-agrees-to-extension]. Fitzpatrick is considered one of the league’s top safeties and will anchor the Jets’ secondary.

Fitzpatrick's deal is a three-year extension for $40 million, making his annual average salary $13.3 million. That ranks 13th among NFL safeties, a potential bargain given his All-Pro pedigree. The Jets still have around $60 million in cap space to address other needs. He's coming off a season with 82 tackles, one interception, one forced fumble, and six passes defended. His coverage grade of 78.3 ranked ninth out of 98 safeties last year. However, opposing QBs had a 103.6 passer rating when targeting him in 2025, a career high. The Jets defense needs a boost after failing to record a single interception in 2025, a league worst. Fitzpatrick has 21 career interceptions. New Jets defensive coordinator Brian Duker coached Fitzpatrick in Miami last season, adding familiarity. Miami received a 2026 seventh-round pick in the trade. Fitzpatrick was the 11th overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. He was traded to the Steelers in 2019, then back to Miami in 2025 for Jalen Ramsey. The Dolphins are projected to win just 4.5 games in 2026 amid a team rebuild. They're also releasing QB Tua Tagovailoa and absorbing a massive dead-cap hit.
