Indian Railways is shifting some trains to different platforms and adding coaches closer to departure as the summer rush swells across major stations. (x.com) In Mumbai, a senior divisional operations manager for coaching said platforms are being changed dynamically to manage congestion during the seasonal surge in passenger traffic. In Jodhpur, the divisional railway manager said coach augmentations are now being allotted from headquarters after officials review waiting lists and peak-demand patterns. (x.com 1) (x.com 2) Those two steps target different chokepoints. A platform change moves a train to a less crowded track inside a station, while coach augmentation adds extra carriages to create more seats or berths on trains that are already filling up. (pib.gov.in) (outlooktraveller.com) The timing is tied to the annual vacation crush, when school holidays and homebound travel push reservation queues higher across long-distance routes. Central Railway said on March 13, 2026 that it would run 1,484 summer special train services, including 749 reserved and 735 unreserved trips, to absorb part of that demand. (timesnownews.com) (outlooktraveller.com) Railways have been using these levers for years, but the current push is more centralized and more frequent. The Ministry of Railways said in an August 2, 2024 reply to Parliament that waiting lists are monitored regularly and that railways respond by augmenting train loads, running special trains, introducing new trains, or increasing frequency when operations allow. (pib.gov.in) The scale of crowd management has grown. The ministry’s year-end review for 2025 said Indian Railways operated more than 43,000 special train trips during the year, including 12,417 summer specials and more than 17,000 trips for the Maha Kumbh rush. (pib.gov.in) Summer planning is also showing up zone by zone. Southern Railway’s press-release page listed multiple summer-special announcements on April 10, April 11, April 13, and April 14, 2026, along with a notice on April 11 for temporary augmentation and revised train composition. (sr.indianrailways.gov.in) Passengers usually feel the change at the last mile: a different platform number on station displays, or a train that arrives with one or two extra coaches attached. The railways’ message is that both decisions are now being made more actively, and in some cases from headquarters, as bookings and station crowds rise through April and May. (x.com 1) (x.com 2)
