Microsoft Enhances Copilot AI in Excel

Microsoft is expanding its AI-powered Copilot capabilities across all Microsoft 365 applications and storage locations. The latest update introduces new data controls and data loss prevention policies to enhance security for automated analysis. In response to growing demand, national training programs are also being scaled up to teach analysts how to leverage Copilot and AI features within Excel.

- Microsoft 365 Copilot was first announced in March 2023 and became generally available for enterprise customers on November 1, 2023. - The tool integrates directly into Excel through a side pane, allowing users to analyze data by typing natural language prompts instead of writing complex formulas manually. - For financial analysis, users can ask Copilot to generate entire models, such as a Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) model with five-year projections, or to build formulas for calculations like the Weighted Average Cost of Capital (WACC). - In data analytics, Copilot can automate data cleaning tasks, generate Python code within Excel for statistical analysis, and draft Power Query steps to merge and transform data sets. - The AI's effectiveness is contingent on the data being stored in a structured Excel Table format within a file saved to OneDrive or SharePoint. - Users can prompt the tool to create charts and PivotTables, identify outliers and trends, and then provide a natural language summary of the key insights from the data. - A future update on the Microsoft 365 roadmap includes a new `=COPILOT()` function that will allow the AI to generate summaries and classify data directly within a worksheet cell. - While it automates routine work, the tool is not intended to replace analysts but rather to shift their focus from repetitive tasks to higher-value strategic analysis and decision-making.
