Cotati Climate Fair Returns March 28
The annual Climate Ready Fair in Cotati is scheduled to return on March 28th. The event will feature workshops on sustainable living topics like drought-tolerant gardening and home energy efficiency, along with exhibits from local environmental groups.
This year's event builds on the inaugural fair in March 2025, expanding its footprint with more workshops and over 40 local agencies and organizations expected to participate. The fair is a key public engagement piece of the city's broader climate action strategy, which includes an "EV Charging Reach Code" that has earned Cotati recognition as a "Frontrunner" in climate policy. The event is held at the Cotati SMART Depot, highlighting the city's focus on sustainable transportation. This initiative is complemented by programs like the grant-funded purchase of five e-bikes for city employee commutes, aimed at reducing Vehicle Miles Traveled (VMT). Cotati is one of six jurisdictions in Sonoma County, including Petaluma and Santa Rosa, that have set a 2030 target for carbon neutrality. This regional commitment is part of the Sonoma Climate Mobilization Strategy, which aims to make the entire county carbon neutral by that year. These local efforts are part of a larger framework of climate action. All local jurisdictions in Sonoma County have passed a Climate Emergency Resolution, a unified stance unique in the United States. In 2022, Cotati also joined several other Sonoma County cities in banning the construction of new gas stations. The city's climate focus is also embedded in its long-term planning documents. The 2023-2031 Housing Element, for example, includes a specific program for Residential Building Decarbonization to promote energy efficiency in both new and existing homes. This fair serves as a practical touchpoint for residents to engage with these larger policy goals. Interactive activities planned for the day include a clothing swap, a book and puzzle exchange, e-waste drop-off, and bike-powered smoothies, demonstrating sustainability in everyday life.
