Vietnam emerges as semiconductor player

Vietnam is becoming a key player in the semiconductor supply chain, particularly in packaging and testing, reflecting a broader shift towards Southeast Asia Vietnam+.

Vietnam's government is strategically aiming to become a key player in the global semiconductor ecosystem by 2050. This involves a phased approach, with the initial phase focusing on attracting foreign direct investment and developing human resources in all stages of the semiconductor industry, from research and design to production, packaging, and testing. To support this ambition, the Vietnamese government has implemented incentives for investment and R&D in the semiconductor industry. These initiatives have led to significant foreign investment, with nearly $16 billion USD invested across 228 projects as of March. Vietnamese companies are also stepping up, with the Viettel Military Industry and Telecoms Group commencing a semiconductor chip manufacturing plant project. Additionally, FPT is investing in an advanced testing and packaging plant, expected to be operational in 2027, which will be the first of its kind owned and operated by Vietnamese citizens. Vietnam has a growing pool of talent with approximately 7,000 chip design engineers, over 6,000 engineers, and more than 10,000 technicians working in semiconductor packaging, testing, and related industries. The country has approximately 166 universities providing training in disciplines related to semiconductor technology.
