OpenAI links ChatGPT to Plaid

- OpenAI on May 15 launched a preview that lets U.S. ChatGPT Pro users link financial accounts through Plaid for in-app analysis and planning. - Plaid said the integration can reach more than 12,000 financial institutions, while OpenAI said over 200 million monthly users ask finance questions. - OpenAI said the preview starts on web and iOS, with Plus rollout later and Intuit support coming soon.

OpenAI said on May 15 that it had begun rolling out a preview of personal-finance tools inside ChatGPT for Pro users in the United States, allowing them to connect accounts through Plaid and ask questions based on their own balances, transactions and goals. The feature is available on the web and iOS, according to OpenAI’s product post. Plaid said its network connects more than 12,000 financial institutions. OpenAI said the launch starts with a smaller group of users before a broader expansion. ### What exactly can users do once they connect accounts? OpenAI said connected users can see a dashboard covering spending, subscriptions, upcoming payments and portfolio performance inside ChatGPT. The company said users can also ask for spending analysis, goal planning, scenario planning, subscription reviews and investment-risk discussions grounded in their financial data. The OpenAI post said users can add other context beyond linked accounts, including a mortgage, a savings goal or a planned large purchase. After authentication through Plaid, ChatGPT begins syncing and categorizing data, which OpenAI said may take a few minutes. ### How does the Plaid connection work? Plaid said on May 15 that OpenAI’s new experience is powered by Plaid and gives U.S. (openai.com) Pro users real-time answers and insights tied to their actual financial picture. Plaid said its coverage includes checking and savings accounts, investments and other account types across more than 12,000 institutions. TechCrunch reported that the supported institutions include Schwab, Fidelity, Chase, Robinhood, American Express and Capital One. (openai.com) OpenAI said users can start from the “Finances” option in ChatGPT’s sidebar or by typing “@Finances, connect my accounts.” ### What has OpenAI said about data controls? (plaid.com) OpenAI said users remain “in control of your data” and can remove account connections from Settings under Apps and Finances. TechCrunch reported that once a service is disconnected, synced data is removed from ChatGPT within 30 days, and users can also view and delete financial memories from the Finances page. (techcrunch.com) OpenAI also said the product is meant to help users stay informed and more confident, but “it is not a replacement for professional financial advice.” That caveat appears in the company’s launch post alongside examples such as debt payoff planning and house-purchase planning. ### Why is OpenAI doing this now? OpenAI said more than 200 million people already come to ChatGPT every month with personal-finance questions, including budgeting, investment questions and future-goal planning. (openai.com) The company linked the new feature to improvements in GPT-5.5, which it said performs better on complex, context-dependent finance questions. Plaid framed the launch as part of a broader push toward what it calls “intelligent finance,” where AI systems use real-time financial data to deliver more personalized answers. In a separate April 9 post, Plaid described a similar expansion with Perplexity that let users connect a wider range of accounts for AI-generated financial insights. ### What are the limits of the rollout? (openai.com) OpenAI said the feature is a preview for Pro users in the United States and is being released first to a smaller group so the company can learn from early use. The company said it plans to improve the product before rolling it out to Plus, with the stated goal of making it available more broadly. OpenAI also said Intuit support is “coming soon.” TechCrunch reported that Intuit connectivity could enable analysis tied to taxes or credit applications, though OpenAI has not given a launch date for that addition. (plaid.com) May 15 is the only date OpenAI has given for the preview launch, and the company has not yet published a date for Plus availability or the Intuit expansion. (openai.com) For now, the rollout is limited to U.S. Pro users on the web and iOS using Plaid-linked accounts.
