New Book Tackles High-Functioning Burnout

A new book by Lauren Tobey, "Spiraling into Control," explores how high-achievers can reframe burnout during career transitions. The release targets professionals navigating high-stakes environments like consulting interviews and onboarding.

Author Lauren Tobey, a trauma-informed coach with degrees in psychology and adult learning, frames burnout not as a failure but as a nervous system adaptation to chronic stress. Her book, "Spiraling into Control," draws from her own experience of nervous system collapse in 2020 and introduces a four-part framework—Ashes, Ember, Flame, and Rise—to navigate recovery. The consulting industry, a magnet for high-achievers, is a known breeding ground for burnout due to intense workloads, constant pressure, and a culture that often rewards overextension. A recent survey found that 55% of the entire U.S. workforce is experiencing burnout, with burned-out employees being nearly three times more likely to seek a new job. For consultants, this is exacerbated by factors like unrealistic client expectations and a lack of control over project assignments. While the "Big Four" have traditionally dominated consulting, hiring is now accelerating at mid-sized and boutique firms. Companies like Guidehouse and Slalom have recently posted more jobs than giants like McKinsey or BCG, signaling a shift in the market. This trend is driven by a client demand for more specialized, agile, and cost-effective partners. For those targeting Enterprise Strategy and Operations roles, boutique firms offer a distinct experience. Consultants in smaller firms often gain more responsibility earlier, have more direct client contact, and work in a more collaborative, less hierarchical culture. This contrasts with larger firms, which may offer more extensive resources but can involve more bureaucracy and less flexibility. In the current hiring landscape, boutique and mid-market firms are aggressively seeking specific expertise. There is a high demand for specialists in supply chain and operations, digital transformation, and AI integration. Candidates with proven experience in process optimization, strategic planning, and change management are particularly well-positioned for these roles.
