Tokyo's Sakura Festival Gets Creative

Tokyo's Chiyoda ward is hosting a Sakura Festival mixing illuminations, boats, music, and Rilakkuma in the heart of the Japanese capital. The festival features night-time cherry blossom illuminations, boat rides along the moats, live music, and appearances from the beloved character. It's being celebrated as a vibrant, multi-sensory experience that captures Tokyo's playful urban spirit during spring.

The festival's main stage is the Chidorigafuchi moat, part of the original Edo Castle, where the first cherry trees were planted in 1881 by a British diplomat. Today, the 700-meter-long promenade is one of Tokyo's most celebrated "hanami" (flower viewing) spots, drawing over a million visitors each year to see the roughly 260 trees that form a spectacular tunnel of blossoms. A major draw is the nighttime illumination, or "yozakura," where the cherry trees are lit up daily from sunset to 9 p.m. In a sustainable initiative, the LED lighting system is powered by renewable energy, making the carbon dioxide emissions from the event effectively zero. This eco-friendly approach allows visitors to enjoy the magical atmosphere guilt-free. The hugely popular rowboat rentals on the moat offer a unique perspective from the water. To manage the high demand, which can lead to long waits, the festival has introduced a "smart ticket" online reservation system. A portion of the proceeds from these advance-purchase tickets is donated to the "Chiyoda Ward Sakura Fund" for the conservation of the cherry trees. This year's festival also celebrates the fifth anniversary of the character Rilakkuma's role as Chiyoda's official tourism ambassador. To mark the occasion, a new manhole cover featuring a Rilakkuma design was installed in December 2025 near Kanda Square. Fans can purchase exclusive 5th-anniversary commemorative merchandise at the Chiyoda City Tourist Information Center. New items include a keychain of the yellow bird character Kiiroitori wearing a traditional coat and a sakura accessory, which became available on March 17. Other exclusive goods feature Rilakkuma and friends in special costumes inspired by local Chiyoda attractions.
