Taiwanese Boba Chain Opens in Rockville

Wushiland Boba, a tea chain from Taiwan, is opening a new location in Rockville's Federal Plaza. The shop is taking over a space formerly occupied by another boba brand, Tiger Sugar.

Wushiland Boba originates from one of Taiwan's most established tea chains, 50 Lan, which was founded in Tainan in 1994 and had over 612 stores in Taiwan as of 2024. The company's U.S. presence began in 2016 with a San Diego location, and it has since focused on expanding primarily in Southern California. The new Rockville location marks a significant step in Wushiland's East Coast expansion, entering a competitive local market that includes other established boba shops. The brand emphasizes high-quality, authentic Taiwanese tea, a factor that resonates with the growing consumer demand for premium and customizable beverage options. The U.S. bubble tea market is experiencing substantial growth, with projections indicating it could become a multi-billion dollar industry within the next decade. This growth is largely driven by millennial and Gen Z consumers who are drawn to the novelty and diverse flavors offered by chains like Wushiland. The replacement of Tiger Sugar by Wushiland Boba in Federal Plaza is indicative of the dynamic and competitive nature of the beverage sector. Tenant turnover in retail centers like Federal Plaza is common as consumer preferences evolve and new brands seek market entry. Tiger Sugar, another Taiwanese-founded chain established in 2017, had popularized the brown sugar boba trend in the area.
