Tether Bets $7.5M on Bitcoin Lightning
Tether invested $7.5 million in a startup developing USDT payments on Bitcoin's Lightning Network, positioning Bitcoin as a global settlement layer for digital dollar transactions. The investment in Utexo, the startup enabling USDT on Lightning, was co-led by Tether and also included participation from notable firms like Big Brain Holdings, Portal Ventures, and the global asset manager Franklin Templeton. This broad investor base signals growing confidence in using Bitcoin's infrastructure for large-scale stablecoin payments. This isn't Tether's only recent move in the Lightning Network space. In late 2025, Tether led a similar $8 million funding round for another startup called Speed. Speed is also focused on facilitating stablecoin payments on the Lightning Network, indicating a multi-pronged strategy by Tether to bolster this ecosystem. The Lightning Network is a "Layer 2" solution built on top of Bitcoin, designed for speed and low costs. While the main Bitcoin network can handle about 7 transactions per second with potentially high fees, the Lightning Network can theoretically process millions of transactions per second for a fraction of a cent. Utexo's technology aims to offer fixed, predictable fees for USDT transactions on the Lightning Network, a key feature for businesses and users who need cost certainty. Transactions are designed to settle in under a second while leveraging the underlying security of the main Bitcoin blockchain. This push to integrate the world's largest stablecoin, with a circulating supply of around $184 billion, directly onto Bitcoin's rails is a significant development. It represents a broader trend of building more complex financial services on top of Bitcoin, expanding its utility beyond just a store of value.
