(commonwealthfoundation.com) The Commonwealth Foundation said the shortlist was selected from 7,806 entries submitted across 54 Commonwealth countries, the largest pool cited in this year’s announcements. British novelist and dramatist Louise Doughty chairs the 2026 judging panel. (commonwealthfoundation.com; brittlepaper.com) Nigeria accounts for four of the seven African finalists: Hussani Abdulrahim for *Arewa Girls*, Oluwatoke Adejoye for *New Things*, Ola W. Halim for *Shock Me I Shock You*, and Dawn Immanuel for *The God under the Bed*. The other African writers are Ghana’s Lois Akoma Antwi, Kenya’s Ken Odak Odumbe, and South Africa’s Lisa-Anne Julien. (brittlepaper.com) The prize is for unpublished short fiction by citizens of Commonwealth countries, with stories running from 2,000 to 5,000 words. It is free to enter and accepts work in English as well as Bengali, Chinese, Creole, French, Greek, Malay, Maltese, Portuguese, Samoan, Swahili, Tamil, and Turkish, with translated work also eligible. (writers-online.co.uk; scroll.in) This year’s shortlist also includes stories originally written in Bengali and Malay, and John Edward DeMicoli became the first Maltese writer ever shortlisted for the prize. Three writers — Celeste Mohammed, Cosmata Lindie, and Ola W. Halim — are returning finalists. (scroll.in; brittlepaper.com) The Commonwealth Foundation divides the award into five regions: Africa, Asia, Canada and Europe, the Caribbean, and the Pacific. One regional winner from each will be announced on May 13, 2026, and each receives £2,500. (commonwealthfoundation.com; scroll.in) The overall winner will be announced in late June 2026 at the award ceremony and will receive £5,000. The shortlisted stories will be published online by adda, and the regional winners will also be published by *Granta*. (brittlepaper.com; writers-online.co.uk) The panel brings one judge from each Commonwealth region alongside Doughty: Fred Khumalo for Africa, Rifat Munim for Asia, Norma Dunning for Canada and Europe, Sharma Taylor for the Caribbean, and Maxine Beneba Clarke for the Pacific. The 2026 shortlist keeps the prize’s focus on unpublished fiction while widening the range of languages and countries represented. (commonwealthfoundation.com; booksandpublishing.com.au)
