Lil Uzi Plans Steampunk Revolution

Lil Uzi Vert has announced intentions to "revolutionize rap" by introducing a bold steampunk aesthetic and sonic direction in upcoming projects. While details remain developing, Uzi's comments suggest a significant visual and musical shift on the horizon.

In a recent interview with Dazed, Lil Uzi Vert explained the shift as a necessary change of scenery for the genre, stating, "Because everything's too goth, so we're gonna make it more steampunk". This move is a deliberate pivot from the dark, gothic wave currently popular in hip-hop. Steampunk as a genre draws inspiration from 19th-century industrial steam-powered machinery and Victorian-era aesthetics. Musically, it often fuses modern technology like synthesizers with vintage instruments such as accordions and hurdy-gurdies, blending influences from industrial, goth, and classical music. This is not the first time Uzi has embraced a significant style evolution. Their aesthetic has morphed from early punk and sneakerhead influences to a deep dive into high-fashion brands like Goyard and Balenciaga, often blurring the lines between punk rock and rap. Uzi has become an icon in androgynous fashion, notably wearing a pleated skirt at the 2021 Met Gala and using they/them pronouns. Uzi's last studio album, *Pink Tape*, was released in June 2023 and debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, moving over 167,000 album-equivalent units in its first week. More recently, after their deal with Atlantic Records ended, Uzi began independently releasing singles like "Chanel Boy" and "Relevant" through a new distribution partnership with Roc Nation in late 2025. While a new album is anticipated for 2026, Uzi has remained elusive about a specific release date. When asked directly about a 2026 release, the artist paused before ambiguously responding, "Um, sure". The move could position steampunk as the next major aesthetic trend in hip-hop, following the gothic style popularized by contemporaries like Playboi Carti and Ken Carson. This new direction offers a fresh set of visual possibilities for music videos and stage design, centered on retrofuturistic, industrial themes.
