Domestic travel hits 2 billion
- Tourism Secretary Bhuvnesh Kumar said India recorded over 2 billion domestic journeys last year, citing rising incomes and travel appetite. (x.com) - Government data also shows the Northeast received about 12.7 million domestic and 0.244 million foreign tourists in 2024. (x.com) - Industry commentary notes that strong domestic demand is cushioning hospitality and transport sectors even as inbound tourism softens. (x.com)
India logged 2.95 billion domestic tourist visits in 2024, pushing internal travel to a new high even as foreign arrivals stayed below 2019 levels. (tourism.gov.in) The Ministry of Tourism’s 2025 data compendium puts domestic tourist visits at 2,948.19 million in 2024, up 17.51% from 2,508.82 million in 2023. The same report says foreign tourist visits reached 20.94 million in 2024, while foreign tourist arrivals were 9.95 million. (tourism.gov.in) Tourism Secretary Bhuvnesh Kumar took charge in April 2026, after the Centre moved him from the Unique Identification Authority of India and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. He replaced Srivatsa Krishna, according to the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet order reported by ETTravelWorld. (travel.economictimes.indiatimes.com) The domestic number is counted as visits, not unique travelers, so one person taking multiple trips is recorded multiple times in the annual total. That is why the figure can run into the billions in a country of more than 1.4 billion people. (tourism.gov.in) The split matters because India’s tourism recovery has been uneven. The ministry’s Annual Tourism Snapshot for 2025 says foreign tourist arrivals fell to 9.02 million in 2025 from 9.95 million in 2024, a 9.4% drop. (tourism.gov.in) That 2025 snapshot also shows arrivals from Bangladesh collapsed to 466,012 from 1.75 million a year earlier, while arrivals excluding Bangladesh rose 4.26%. The United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada and Bangladesh were the top source markets listed for 2025. (tourism.gov.in) In the Northeast, the tourism ministry’s 2024 data shows 12.78 million domestic tourist visits and 0.244 million foreign tourist visits across the eight states. The Observer Research Foundation said that amounted to 0.43% of India’s domestic tourist visits and 1.17% of foreign tourist arrivals in 2024. (orfonline.org) The government has been publishing more frequent tourism snapshots as it tracks those shifts. Its annual-reports page lists monthly, quarterly and annual releases through January 2026, alongside the full 2025 compendium and 2025 provisional snapshot. (tourism.gov.in) The picture now is a travel market powered mainly by Indians traveling inside India. The official data shows domestic demand rising fast enough to keep the headline tourism numbers growing even as inbound travel remains patchier. (tourism.gov.in)
