Southampton Gallery Reopens After £2M Refurb

The Southampton City Art Gallery in the UK is set to reopen after a £2 million refurbishment, marking a significant moment for the local arts community. The gallery promises a refreshed space for both classic and contemporary works. Meanwhile, Manchester will display Picasso works for the first time in a free exhibition, with many pieces having never been shown to the public before.

The £2.23 million refurbishment was supported by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport's Museum Estate and Development Fund, which is administered by Arts Council England. The project's goal was to preserve the Grade II* listed building and protect its nationally significant art collection for the future. The year-long renovation, which began after the gallery's closure on February 22, 2025, involved extensive repairs to the roof and heating systems. A new sustainable ventilation system was also installed, integrating with the city's geothermal infrastructure to improve energy efficiency. Part of the internal restoration included repairing the vaulted ceiling in the Main Hall, which had suffered historical water damage. This work involved reinstating the iconic stripes of the 1994 artwork 'With the Arcades' by Daniel Buren, a celebrated feature of the space. First opened in 1939, the gallery's creation was largely funded by bequests from local pharmacist Robert Chipperfield and councillor Frederick William Smith. The building was damaged during World War II, delaying its post-war reopening until 1946. The gallery's collection features over 5,300 works covering six centuries of European art history. While the building was closed, a separate project funded by a £26,000 Arts Council England grant began digitizing 1,000 works on paper from the collection that are rarely seen due to their sensitivity to light. Upon reopening on March 7, 2026, the gallery will showcase new acquisitions, including the sculpture 'Centrifugal Forces' by Laura Ford. It will also launch a major new exhibition by Southampton-born artist and musician Emma Richardson, titled "Levitate Me: Desire, Ecstasy and The Sublime".
