Multiple Hikers Rescued in Arizona

Scottsdale and Phoenix fire crews rescued a 68-year-old dehydrated hiker from a mountain trail, while southern Arizona reported multiple hikers needing rescue from overheating as winter temperatures rise. Meanwhile, two hikers' bodies were found on a ridge near Wales' highest mountain summit.

In Arizona, rescue operations are a frequent occurrence, with Phoenix fire crews alone conducting 108 hiking rescues in 2025 and 159 in 2024. Many of these incidents involve local residents who underestimate the trail difficulty and the intensity of the heat. A recent rescue at the Gateway Trailhead in Scottsdale's McDowell Sonoran Preserve involved a group of 13 hikers, including three children, who became lost and ran out of water. The southern part of the state sees similar emergencies, with the Pima County Sheriff's Department frequently responding to calls in areas like Sabino Canyon for heat-related illnesses. In one recent incident, seven people, including a 15-month-old, required rescue from the Seven Falls area due to the heat. Rescues in the Tucson area are not limited to heat; a hiker was recently carried out of the McCain Loop Trail after an injury. Across the Atlantic, the two hikers found in Wales have been identified as Eddie Hill, 20, and Jayden Long, 19, from Norfolk, England. Their bodies were discovered on Crib y Ddysgl, a notoriously challenging "knife-edge ridge" near the summit of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon). The route is part of the Snowdon Horseshoe, which is considered unsuitable for inexperienced walkers, especially in wet or windy conditions. An inquest has been opened into the deaths of Hill and Long, with a coroner stating there is reason to suspect the deaths were "unnatural" pending post-mortem examinations. Rescue teams worked through the night in "extreme winter conditions" to locate the two men after they were reported missing. The weather in the area on the day they went missing included precipitation, snow, and winds with a maximum strength of 5 Bft.
