Lisbon Stand-Up Comedy Festival Underway

The Lisbon Stand-Up Comedy Festival is organized by the international collective Stand-Up Europe, a network dedicated to fostering an English-language comedy circuit outside the UK. The event serves as a meeting point for comedians and producers from cities like Berlin, London, and Amsterdam to connect with Lisbon's growing English-speaking comedy community. This year's festival features over 70 comedians from across Europe. The schedule is split between two main venues: the In Impetus arts school in Alcântara and the Teatro Bocage. Ticket prices for the various shows generally range from €15 to €20. Beyond traditional stand-up, the festival includes competitive and interactive formats. A "Roast Battle" at In Impetus will see comedians engage in one-on-one duels of witty insults. The same venue will also host a "Gong Show," where performers must win over the audience to avoid being gonged off stage. The festival culminates on March 1 with the "Best of the Fest" showcase at Teatro Bocage, featuring the top-performing acts from the preceding days. This final event is typically the first to sell out, highlighting the audience's interest in the curated best-of format. The festival is part of a broader boom in Lisbon's comedy scene, which now supports multiple comedy clubs and shows in English nearly every night of the week. Venues like the Lisboa Comedy Club, Selva Comedy Cafe, and Chiado Comedy Club have become central to developing new talent and providing regular stages for performers. This growth reflects a larger trend in Portugal, where stand-up comedy is expanding from a niche market to a mainstream attraction. Major international comedians are increasingly adding Portuguese dates to their tours, and local comedians are filling the country's largest venues, signaling a new era for the art form. Another major event, the Worten Mock Fest, drew over 10,000 people in its debut year and will return in August with major international headliners like Chris D'Elia, Michelle Wolf, and Sam Morril.
