Mets Walk Off Astros
The New York Mets provided a notable highlight with a walk-off win against the Houston Astros in spring training action. While early spring games focus more on evaluating talent than results, the walk-off victory showcases depth and competitive spirit even in pre-season play.
The game-winning single came from 21-year-old utility prospect Yonatan Henriquez. Known for his versatility, Henriquez played six different positions across the Mets' low-A and high-A affiliates in 2025 and showed a strong second-half performance at the plate. He stole 35 bases in the minors last season. Mets starting pitcher Clay Holmes was solid in his final tune-up before joining Team USA for the World Baseball Classic. The right-hander, who transitioned from a reliever to a starter in 2025, pitched four innings, allowing just one run while striking out four. This international experience will provide Holmes with high-leverage innings as he aims to be a stabilizing force in the Mets' 2026 rotation. Outfielder Cristian Pache, in camp on a minor league deal, continued to make a strong case for a spot on the major league roster. The former top prospect, known for his elite defensive skills, contributed an RBI double in the win. Pache is looking to stick with a big-league club after spending the 2025 season in Triple-A for the Arizona Diamondbacks. Both the Mets and Astros are entering the 2026 season with something to prove after disappointing finishes in 2025. The Mets, under manager Carlos Mendoza, finished 83-79 and missed the playoffs after a late-season collapse. Similarly, the Joe Espada-led Astros missed the postseason for the first time since 2016, ending their year with an 87-75 record.
