Halogen Ventures Backs Nine Alabama Startups

Jesse Draper's Halogen Ventures announced its first nine investments in Alabama, part of a strategic push to fund early-stage startups with women on the founding team. The move signals growing investor interest in diversifying tech ecosystems beyond traditional hubs.

This investment round includes several startups with potential applications of location-based technology. Croux, an AI-powered marketplace, connects local workers with flexible shifts in industries like hospitality and events, implying a geolocation-based matching system to fill staffing gaps in real-time. Another company, Moxi, provides a flexible childcare and co-working platform, a model dependent on physical locations and local community engagement. The portfolio also features companies leveraging location for specialized services. Doctours is a medical tourism marketplace that helps patients find and book affordable healthcare with international doctors, a business built on connecting users to services in different global locations. Additionally, Yard is developing autonomous robotic solutions for outdoor maintenance, a field that often relies on GPS and geofencing for navigation and operational accuracy. For those tracking mobile and AI trends, Skyfire AI provides advanced analytics and AI solutions for enterprise decision-making, including autonomous mission planning for drones which inherently use location data. KrillPay, a borderless digital wallet, includes a "Scan to Pay" feature for merchants, hinting at capabilities for in-person, location-based transactions. This initiative is part of a larger strategy by Halogen Ventures, which partnered with the state-backed Innovate Alabama to invest $10 million across approximately 20 companies. Halogen is the first out-of-state venture capital firm to receive strategic funding from the state for its third fund, signaling a calculated bet on an undervalued ecosystem. The investment arrives as Alabama's tech sector is experiencing significant growth, having surged 50% since 2018 with projections to double by 2030. Venture capital investment in the state has dramatically increased from just $3 million a decade ago to $321 million in 2023. This funding round from Halogen Ventures specifically targets a market gap, as Alabama currently ranks 50th in the nation for female entrepreneurship. Founding Partner Jesse Draper, a fourth-generation venture capitalist, leads Halogen with a focus on early-stage, female-founded consumer technology companies. The firm's broader portfolio includes over 85 companies with a combined market valuation exceeding $15 billion, and features six unicorns. Some of Halogen's existing portfolio companies, like parking technology leader Metropolis, already have a presence in Alabama.
