Spotify Launches 'DJ in Your Device' Feature
Spotify has rolled out a new feature described as putting a "DJ in your device." The move signals a deeper push into dynamic, AI-driven playlist curation that goes beyond standard algorithmic recommendations to create a more personalized listening session.
The feature's initial rollout on February 22, 2023, was a beta for Premium subscribers in the U.S. and Canada. This launch combined Spotify's existing personalization algorithms with generative AI technology from OpenAI to create spoken commentary for the curated music streams. The AI's voice is modeled after Xavier "X" Jernigan, Spotify's Head of Cultural Partnerships and a former host of the "The Get Up" morning show. His voice and personality were chosen because they already resonated with a large listener base from his previous work on Spotify's podcasts. The realistic voice synthesis is powered by technology from Sonantic, a London-based AI voice platform that Spotify acquired in June 2022. Before the acquisition, Sonantic was known for its work in the film industry, including creating a voice for Val Kilmer in "Top Gun: Maverick" after his battle with throat cancer. Under the hood, the DJ feature leverages a hybrid recommendation system. It uses a combination of collaborative and content-based filtering to analyze a user's listening history, playlists, and even the time of day to make its selections. This is the same core technology that powers well-known features like "Discover Weekly" and "Release Radar". To generate the commentary, Spotify employs a team of music experts, culture specialists, and scriptwriters in what it calls a "Writers' Room." This team works alongside the generative AI to ensure the spoken content is culturally relevant, accurate, and enhances the listening experience. Since its initial launch, the DJ has expanded globally to markets including Australia, the UK, and Ireland. Spotify has also introduced new voice models, such as a Spanish-speaking AI DJ named "Livi," indicating a move toward further localization and personalization of the feature.
