Ellucian launched Ellucian Student on April 21, pitching a new AI-native platform for colleges instead of a traditional student information system. (ellucian.com) The company said Ellucian Student combines student records, human capital management, and finance on one software-as-a-service platform. It said the product is built with “agentic” artificial intelligence, meaning software agents can carry out campus tasks across workflows rather than just answer questions. (ellucian.com) Ellucian said the system is designed to automate cross-department work, flag student risk factors earlier, offer self-service tools for students and staff, and speed up reporting with integrated data and analytics. Laura Ipsen, Ellucian’s president and chief executive, said the company is tying those functions to a “student-first architecture.” (ellucian.com) A student information system is the software colleges use to handle admissions, registration, billing, transcripts, and degree progress. Ellucian is now arguing that those campus systems should sit inside a broader AI layer that also connects finance and human resources. (ellucian.com) The launch lands as colleges are moving from AI pilots to campuswide adoption. In Ellucian’s survey released April 15, 66% of higher-education institutions said they are already using AI, up from 49% a year earlier, and 88% said usage will increase over the next two years. (prnewswire.com) Ellucian has been laying the groundwork for that pitch for months. Its press releases show Ellucian Student deployments or selections at Carroll University on March 18, East Tennessee State University on March 19, New Mexico Military Institute on April 1, Effat University on April 6, and Parkland College on April 14. (ellucian.com) The company is also building an integration marketplace around the product. On April 20, Ellucian launched Ellucian Marketplace, a catalog for Ellucian Student customers to discover, deploy, and manage software integrations inside their campus environments. (ellucian.com) That matters for vendors that sell into universities, including recruiting, advising, financial-aid, and early-career talent tools. A campus platform that bundles records, workflows, and integrations can become the system other products have to plug into. (ellucian.com) Ellucian said in October that it works with 2,800 customers across 50 countries and serves 20 million students. If Ellucian Student becomes the default front end for those institutions, the company’s latest launch could reshape how colleges buy and connect student-facing software. (ellucian.com)
