T.I. Regrets Leaving Atlantic Records

T.I. admitted this week that leaving Atlantic Records was "a bad idea," expressing regret for the decision and reflecting on the impact it had on his career trajectory. This comes amid his ongoing feud with 50 Cent and follows his earlier success with "LET EM KNOW" re-entering the Top 40. The admission offers rare insight into major label relationships from an established artist's perspective.

T.I.'s departure from Atlantic Records occurred in 2013 after a ten-year run that concluded with his eighth album, "Trouble Man: Heavy Is the Head." The rapper stated he left to determine if his success was self-made or a product of the label's machine, a question he answered upon realizing how much work the label did behind the scenes. Under Atlantic, T.I. reached commercial peaks with albums like 2008's "Paper Trail," which sold 568,000 copies in its first week and became his third consecutive number-one album. In contrast, his 2020 independent album, "The L.I.B.R.A.," sold approximately 23,000 units in its first week. After his Atlantic contract expired, T.I. signed with Columbia Records for his 2014 album, "Paperwork," which debuted at number two on the Billboard 200. He later moved to Roc Nation in 2016 and had a deal with Epic Records for his 2018 album, "Dime Trap," before releasing music independently. The recent hit "LET EM KNOW" is the lead single from his upcoming twelfth and final studio album, "Kill the King." The track, produced by Pharrell Williams, marks a significant resurgence for the artist. The song has become T.I.'s highest-charting solo single on the Billboard Hot 100 since 2010, reaching number 38. It also climbed to the number one spot on the Mediabase urban radio chart, driven by a significant week-over-week increase in airplay. The feud with 50 Cent was reignited in early February 2026, when T.I. appeared on a podcast and renewed his years-old challenge for a Verzuz battle. 50 Cent rejected the challenge and escalated the conflict by referencing old allegations that T.I. cooperated with authorities following a 2007 federal gun charge. The online beef quickly devolved, with 50 Cent posting unflattering photos of T.I.'s wife, Tameka "Tiny" Harris. In response, T.I. released a series of diss tracks, while his sons also defended their mother on social media.
