Houston's Third Ward Trending

- In 1872, a group of formerly enslaved people, led by Reverend John Henry "Jack" Yates, purchased 10 acres of land for $800 to create Emancipation Park. This established a dedicated space to celebrate Juneteenth and for decades it was the only public park in Houston available to African Americans. - The neighborhood is home to Project Row Houses, a nationally recognized arts and culture organization founded in 1993 by artist Rick Lowe and six other artists. The project transformed 22 derelict "shotgun" style houses into an arts venue and community space that now spans 40 properties. - The Third Ward has been home to numerous influential figures, including artists Beyoncé and Solange Knowles, actor Phylicia Rashad, choreographer Debbie Allen, blues legend Lightnin' Hopkins, and George Floyd. - From the 1930s to the 1970s, the Eldorado Ballroom was a premier venue on the "Chitlin' Circuit," hosting legendary musicians like Ray Charles, B.B. King, and Etta James. After being dormant for decades, the ballroom was restored by Project Row Houses and reopened in 2023. - The construction of Interstate 45 in the 1950s and later State Highway 288 physically divided the neighborhood, separating it from downtown and contributing to economic decline in a community that had previously been a thriving, self-sustaining hub for Black-owned businesses. - The neighborhood is currently experiencing rapid gentrification, which has led to demographic shifts and community activism to preserve its historic character. Between 2007 and 2017, as new developments moved in, the white population in the Greater Third Ward increased by 100% while the Black population decreased by 10%.
