OPAQUE Raises $24M to Advance Confidential AI

OPAQUE, a confidential computing company, raised $24 million in a Series B funding round, valuing the company at $300 million. The investment will be used to advance the development of its privacy-preserving AI platform for enterprise use cases, a growing concern in regulated industries.

- OPAQUE's technology is rooted in the MC2 open-source project from UC Berkeley's RISELab, the same lab that produced Apache Spark and Databricks. Databricks co-founder Ion Stoica is also a co-founder of OPAQUE, along with other UC Berkeley researchers. - The platform utilizes secure hardware enclaves, such as Intel SGX, to create Trusted Execution Environments (TEEs). This allows for the processing of encrypted data within a protected area of a CPU, isolating it from the host system, including the operating system and cloud provider. - This latest funding round brings OPAQUE's total financing to $55.5 million. The Series B was led by Walden Catalyst, with participation from previous investors like Intel Capital and new strategic partners such as the Advanced Technology Research Council (ATRC). Prior funding included a $9.5 million seed round and a $22 million Series A. - A key feature of the platform is cryptographic attestation, which provides verifiable proof of how data and models are handled during runtime. This generates hardware-signed audit logs to ensure compliance with regulations and internal policies. - The company's offerings include OPAQUE Studio, a development environment for building AI agents with embedded privacy, and OPAQUE Gateway, which acts as a privacy layer to sanitize sensitive data from LLM prompts. - OPAQUE's platform is built on top of popular data analytics frameworks like Spark SQL, allowing data scientists to use familiar Python and SQL skills to work with encrypted data. - The technology is particularly aimed at highly regulated industries like financial services, healthcare, and government, where it can be used for tasks like fraud detection and analyzing sensitive health data without exposing the raw information. - OPAQUE is expanding its focus to include post-quantum security and sovereign cloud environments, addressing emerging security threats and data residency requirements.
