Former FBI Cyber Chief Joins Terakeet
Matt Gorham, the former head of the FBI's Cyber Division, has joined online reputation management firm Terakeet. Gorham brings over 30 years of experience in cybersecurity, crisis management, and national security to the company.
As Assistant Director of the FBI's Cyber Division, Matt Gorham led investigations and operations against nation-state and criminal cyber actors. His experience includes developing and implementing a new cyber strategy for the bureau, regularly engaging with intelligence and defense community partners. He also served as the director of the National Cyber Investigative Joint Task Force, a body that coordinates the cyber-security efforts of dozens of U.S. federal agencies. Gorham's background extends beyond cybercrime to include crisis management and counterterrorism. He was the deputy assistant director of the FBI's Critical Incident Response Group, which oversees assets like the Hostage Rescue Team and Behavioral Analysis Unit profilers. Earlier in his career, he directed all FBI operations and deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan. Terakeet specializes in online reputation management and what it calls "generative AI optimization." The company uses patented technology to analyze and shape brand narratives across digital channels, including traditional search engines and emerging AI chat tools. This move comes as AI-generated misinformation is a growing concern, with AI tools becoming increasingly capable of creating coordinated disinformation campaigns. The firm's focus is on controlling how brands are perceived online, a challenge that has grown with the rise of AI-generated content which can be shaped by unvetted and emotionally charged third-party platforms. Terakeet works to build, protect, and repair brand reputations for global companies and influential individuals. Gorham's move from the FBI to the private sector is part of a larger trend. Former high-ranking government cybersecurity officials are increasingly sought after by corporations to help navigate the complex and evolving landscape of digital threats. These officials bring unique insights into the tactics of state-sponsored and criminal hacking groups. This transition highlights a growing synergy between government cyber-defense experience and private-sector needs. As Gorham noted during his time at the FBI, combating cyber threats effectively requires strong partnerships between the government and the private sector. During his tenure, he was involved in tipping off social media companies like Facebook and Twitter to disinformation campaigns.
