Amazon Interviews Prioritize Explanations

An inside look at Amazon's SDE-1 interview process reveals that communication is as critical as coding. Rejections are reportedly often due to poor explanations of problem-solving approaches, not just the inability to code a solution, with a special focus on the 'Bar Raiser' round for deep problem-solving.

The "Bar Raiser" is an interviewer from a different team who has undergone 6 to 12 months of specialized training. Their role is to be an objective third party, ensuring every new hire raises the average quality at Amazon and they hold veto power over the hiring decision. Evaluations are anchored in Amazon's 16 Leadership Principles, which are the company's core values. Each interviewer in the "Loop" is assigned two to three principles to assess, such as "Customer Obsession," "Invent and Simplify," or "Ownership." Candidates are expected to answer behavioral questions using the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result). Responses should be specific, detailing personal contributions ("I," not "we") and quantifying impact with data and metrics whenever possible. Technical rounds for SDE-1 roles typically involve one or two LeetCode-medium style problems per session. Common topics include data structures like arrays, linked lists, trees, graphs, and hash maps, with a focus on practical problem-solving. The full interview process often spans four to eight weeks, starting with an online assessment that includes coding problems and a work-style simulation. This is followed by a series of 4-5 interviews in the final "Loop" round, covering coding, system design, and the leadership principles. Compared to other FAANG companies, Amazon places a significantly higher emphasis on these behavioral, principle-driven questions. While Google's interviews are known for being more focused on deep algorithmic theory, Amazon integrates cultural fit assessment into every round of its technical interviews.
