Brighton Named UK's Most Creative City

Brighton and Hove have been named the UK's "most creative city" in a new ranking that assessed creative jobs, galleries, theatres, museums, festivals, and art schools. The coastal city boasts 26 galleries and 7.45 theatres per 100,000 residents, excelling across all creative metrics. This cements Brighton's reputation as a cultural powerhouse and ideal urban destination for arts enthusiasts.

- The "Creative City Index" was compiled by the flexible workspace provider Co-space, which analyzed creative jobs, cultural venues, and events across major UK cities. Brighton and Hove achieved a perfect score of 10/10, surpassing London (9.14) and Edinburgh (7.93). - Economically, Brighton's digital and creative sector is a significant force, contributing over £1 billion annually to the city's economy, a value comparable to its tourism industry. The creative industries in the Greater Brighton area generated more than £1.5 billion in turnover in a recent year, with the software sector being the largest contributor. - The city is home to a thriving digital-creative cluster, sometimes referred to as "Silicon Beach," which includes over 1,500 high-value businesses. This cluster has seen significant growth in new business formation and turnover. - Brighton hosts over 60 annual cultural festivals, including the Brighton Festival, the largest arts festival in England. Other major events include the Brighton Fringe, The Great Escape for new music, and Brighton Pride, one of the UK's most popular LGBTQ+ events. - While London has a greater overall number of creative jobs and art schools, Brighton's strength lies in the high density of its cultural venues. It has more than double the number of art galleries per 100,000 people compared to the capital. - Researchers have identified a trend of "fused" businesses in Brighton, which combine creative arts and design skills with technological expertise. These firms have shown exceptionally high growth rates, faster than the local and national economies. - This recognition aligns with past studies, such as a 2015 report that ranked Brighton as having the highest concentration of creative small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) relative to its total SME base. Another report in 2023 named it the third "craftiest" city in the UK.
