eBay to Cut Hundreds of Bay Area Jobs
eBay is cutting hundreds of jobs in the Bay Area, with most of the layoffs impacting its San Jose headquarters. The move is part of a broader tech industry restructuring as the company aims to streamline its operations.
The recent round of eBay job cuts will impact 271 employees in the Bay Area, with 243 positions eliminated at its San Jose headquarters and another 28 in San Francisco. This is part of a larger, global workforce reduction of approximately 800 employees, which accounts for about 6% of eBay's total staff. These layoffs mark the third consecutive year of job reductions at the e-commerce giant. In early 2024, eBay cut around 1,000 jobs, citing that its headcount and expenses had grown faster than the business. This followed a reduction of about 500 roles in early 2023 as the post-pandemic online shopping boom cooled. The company stated the current restructuring is an effort to "reinvest across our business and align our structure with our strategic priorities." This move comes shortly after eBay announced its $1.2 billion acquisition of Depop, a fashion resale app popular with younger consumers, in a bid to strengthen its position in the secondhand market. The layoffs are occurring amidst a broader trend of significant job cuts across the Bay Area's tech sector. In 2025 alone, the region saw a net loss of 27,300 tech jobs, marking the third straight year of employment decline for the industry. However, the pace of these losses has slowed compared to the cuts seen in 2023 and 2024.
