Free Educational Events for Children in LA
Los Angeles County is offering free educational events for children today, including a Baby & Toddler Storytime at Exposition Park and Pi/STEM/MEC Day at Los Angeles Valley College. The Wilshire Branch Library presents "Reading to the Rescue" with therapy dogs.
Los Angeles County supports close to two million children through its regional education agency. These free events are part of a larger effort to provide equitable access to academic environments and overall well-being for children. LA County has a diverse population, with Hispanics/Latinos making up 65.2% of the K-12 student population. These free programs address a critical need, as licensed centers and family child care homes in LA County can only serve 13% of working parents with infants and toddlers. However, there are 12% more licensed preschool spaces than there are preschool-age children of working parents. The county also offers programs like Tiny Tots for children ages 3-5 to prepare them for preschool. Beyond these specific events, Los Angeles County offers various free or low-cost entertainment and learning opportunities. These include programs at the Music Center, community concerts, and family days at museums. Many branches of the Los Angeles Public Library also host free educational programs for children. In the 2014-2015 school year, 20,499 children in LA County participated in transitional kindergarten, a 33% increase from the prior year. The Los Angeles Conservancy also partners with the Los Angeles Unified School District to improve learning opportunities for Black students.
