Salmon Recalled for Listeria Risk
Slade Gorton & Co., Inc. has recalled one lot of Wellsley Farms Farm-Raised Atlantic Salmon sold at BJ’s Wholesale Club. The recall was issued due to potential contamination with listeria monocytogenes, highlighting ongoing food safety challenges.
The specific product recalled is lot number 3896 of the Wellsley Farms Farm-Raised Atlantic Salmon, sold in 2-pound bags. The recall was initiated after a random sample collected by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration tested positive for the bacteria. This salmon was sold exclusively at BJ's Wholesale Club stores in seven states: Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. The affected packages were available for purchase between January 31 and February 7, 2026. Consumers can identify the recalled product by the UPC code 888670025963 and lot number 3896, which are printed on the back of the bag. As of the recall announcement, no illnesses have been reported in connection with this product. Listeria monocytogenes can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, particularly in young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems. The bacteria is unusual in that it can survive and grow even at refrigerator temperatures. For healthy individuals, symptoms can include high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, and diarrhea. However, for pregnant women, a Listeria infection poses a more severe risk, potentially leading to miscarriages and stillbirths even if the mother experiences only mild, flu-like symptoms. BJ's Wholesale Club is in the process of directly notifying members who may have purchased the recalled salmon. Consumers who have the product are advised not to eat it and can call 1-888-628-0730 for instructions on how to get a full refund and dispose of the fish.
