PIER59 Studios Launches 'Megaverse' Virtual Production Hub
New York's PIER59 Studios has launched Megaverse™, a new integrated ecosystem for virtual production and extended reality (XR). The facility features the largest LED screen in the Northeast, positioning it as a major hub for film, television, and live event production.
Founded in 1995 by Federico Pignatelli, PIER59 Studios has a long-standing history as a premier 110,000-square-foot multimedia complex in Manhattan's Chelsea Piers. Before its recent tech-focused expansion, it was already considered the largest commercial photography studio in the world, hosting shoots for iconic brands like Gucci, Tom Ford, and Vogue. The studio has been a creative hub for legendary photographers such as Annie Leibovitz and Steven Meisel, and has welcomed a vast array of cultural figures including Beyoncé, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Madonna. Its 11 column-free studios have also been a preferred venue for New York Fashion Week events and have been utilized by major entertainment companies like HBO and Netflix. The "Megaverse" ecosystem is built around a 65-foot by 18-foot curved LED wall, complemented by a 40-foot articulating LED ceiling and four movable LED "wild walls." This setup, the largest of its kind in the Northeast, allows for the creation of immersive, photorealistic virtual environments, eliminating the need for extensive travel and location shoots. This virtual production stage is powered by cutting-edge technology, including Planar LED displays, Disguise media servers for real-time 3D rendering, and a Stype RedSpy camera tracking system. This integration allows filmmakers and photographers to capture final-pixel imagery in-camera, significantly reducing post-production time and costs. The move into virtual production aligns with a significant growth trend in the industry, accelerated by the demand for more efficient and sustainable content creation. By offering a fully integrated solution in the heart of Manhattan, PIER59 aims to serve a broad range of clients, from high fashion and advertising to film and television. This technological leap is part of a broader strategy for the studio, which is also incorporating AI-assisted tools into its workflows to enhance creative possibilities. The studio has already hosted virtual production projects for notable clients like HBO's "Succession," Neiman Marcus, and Fendi. The investment in Megaverse positions PIER59 Studios as a key player in New York City's booming film and television industry, which in 2019 contributed an estimated $81.6 billion in total economic output and supported approximately 185,000 jobs.
