Boracay Earns Global Beach Recognition

Boracay landed on Tripadvisor's "Best of Best Beaches" list, cementing its status as one of the world's premier beach destinations. The recognition celebrates the Philippine island's powdery white sand, crystal-clear waters, and vibrant local culture. This follows Boracay's recent designation as Asia's top beach, reinforcing its global appeal for both relaxation and adventure.

This latest recognition follows a series of accolades for the island, including being named Asia's Leading Luxury Island Destination at the World Travel Awards in 2024 and among Asia's 'top islands' by Condé Nast Traveler in 2025. The consistent high praise comes after a significant, government-mandated rehabilitation of the island. In 2018, then-President Rodrigo Duterte ordered a six-month closure of Boracay, calling the popular destination a "cesspool" due to overwhelming pollution and unregulated development. The closure was a drastic but necessary measure to address severe environmental degradation, including inadequate sewage and waste management systems that were harming the island's famous beaches and marine ecosystems. The rehabilitation effort was a multi-agency initiative led by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), the Department of Tourism (DOT), and the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG). The project involved demolishing illegal structures, upgrading the island's sewage and drainage systems, and enforcing stricter environmental regulations to protect Boracay's natural resources. Since reopening, Boracay has seen a steady influx of tourists, with visitor arrivals reaching 374,958 in the first two months of 2025. In 2025, the island generated P47 billion in tourism-related revenues, providing a significant boost to the local economy. The local government has set a target of 2.6 million tourist arrivals for 2026. To manage the environmental impact of tourism, the government has implemented a carrying capacity limit, allowing only a certain number of tourists on the island at any given time. Additionally, smoking and drinking alcohol are now prohibited on the beaches to maintain their cleanliness and appeal. Looking ahead, the provincial government of Aklan is partnering with a tech company to introduce a smart port system in 2025 to streamline the ticketing process for tourists. The DENR has also issued new administrative guidelines for construction and development on the island to ensure its long-term sustainability. These measures aim to balance tourism growth with the ongoing protection of Boracay's environment.
