Amazon AWS Unveils AI Vertical Video Tool

Amazon Web Services has launched a new AI tool that transforms horizontal live broadcasts into vertical video formats in real time. The technology is designed to optimize content instantly for platforms like TikTok and Instagram Reels. Fox and NBCUniversal are among the initial customers adopting the tool to accelerate their clip creation process.

- The official name of the tool is AWS Elemental Inference, and it functions as a fully managed service, meaning users don't need to manage the underlying infrastructure or have deep AI expertise. It operates with a low latency of 6-10 seconds, a significant reduction from the minutes or even hours required for traditional post-production workflows. - During beta testing with partners like Fox Sports and NBCUniversal, the service demonstrated a cost savings of over 34% compared to workflows that use multiple, separate tools for clipping, AI tagging, and transcoding. This cost efficiency is a key value proposition for large-scale media operations. - The technology behind the tool goes beyond simple cropping. It uses what AWS calls an "agentic AI" that analyzes video in real-time to identify key moments, track subjects, and maintain visual coherence when reframing for a 9:16 aspect ratio. For sports, this means it can recognize events like touchdowns and goals to automatically generate highlight clips. - Fox Sports, a key development partner, collaborated with AWS for 18 months to train the AI model on their content, refining its ability to understand the editorial nuances of sports highlights. The network plans to use the tool extensively for its broadcast of all 104 FIFA World Cup matches. - The service integrates directly into AWS Elemental MediaLive, a widely used platform for live video encoding. This allows existing AWS customers to adopt the new AI features without a major overhaul of their current video architecture. - While the initial focus is on sports, the underlying technology is part of a broader push by AWS into generative AI for the Media & Entertainment industry. The company is positioning services like Amazon Bedrock and Amazon Q as foundational tools for everything from content personalization and metadata enrichment to creating virtual sets and AI agents for production workflows. - The pricing model is consumption-based, meaning users only pay for the features they use and the amount of video they process, with no upfront commitments. The service is currently available in several AWS regions, including North Virginia, Oregon, Ireland, and Mumbai.
