Wholesale Inflation Ticks Up Unexpectedly

U.S. wholesale prices rose 0.5% in January, a stronger-than-expected increase that signals renewed inflationary pressure. Analysts attribute the uptick to rising import tariffs and supply chain issues, with some warning that businesses may soon pass these higher costs on to consumers.

The surprise uptick in wholesale prices was driven entirely by the services sector, which saw costs jump 0.8% in January. This was the largest monthly increase for services since July 2025. In contrast, the index for goods actually fell by 0.3%, pulled down by a 2.7% drop in energy prices. A key factor behind the services surge was a 14.4% jump in margins for wholesalers of professional and commercial equipment. This suggests that businesses are passing through the costs associated with new import tariffs enacted over the past year. The average U.S. tariff rate rose from 2.6% to 13% over the course of 2025, with studies indicating U.S. firms and consumers bear nearly 90% of this economic burden. While some tariffs were recently invalidated by the Supreme Court, a complex web of duties remains on goods like steel, aluminum, and vehicles. This policy volatility adds another layer of risk for global supply chains, which are already navigating disruptions from the Chinese New Year factory shutdowns in Asia. The Producer Price Index (PPI) is often watched as a leading indicator for the Consumer Price Index (CPI), as higher wholesale costs can be passed on to customers. The latest annual CPI reading was 2.4%, but this strong PPI data has prompted some analysts to raise their forecasts for the Fed's preferred inflation gauge, the core Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) price index. This persistent wholesale inflation makes it less likely the Federal Reserve will cut interest rates before June. The central bank is holding its benchmark rate steady in the 3.50% to 3.75% range as it waits for more confidence that inflation is moving sustainably back toward its 2% long-term target.
