Decentralized Compute Protocol Akash Launches 'Homenode'

Akash, a decentralized compute protocol, has launched early access for its "Homenode" product. The initiative enables individuals to contribute compute power from everyday devices like laptops and desktops to the network. While Akash is a Cosmos-native protocol, the move signals a broader trend toward democratizing distributed AI computation that could influence Solana's AI agent ecosystem.

- Akash founder Greg Osuri has stated the protocol is considering migrating from the Cosmos ecosystem, with Solana being a "strong contender" among more than 15 blockchains being reviewed. The potential move is driven by Solana's high throughput and low fees, which are well-suited for Akash's AI and DePIN workloads. - The initial "early access" phase for Homenode is focused on high-end consumer hardware, specifically systems with NVIDIA RTX 4090 or RTX 5090 GPUs. The company plans to expand support to a wider range of cards, including NVIDIA's RTX 20-50 series, GTX 9-16 series, and Quadro workstation cards. - Homenode is designed to simplify the process of becoming a compute provider, removing the need for technical expertise in Kubernetes that was previously required. It is delivered as a dedicated operating system (ISO image) that a user installs from a USB drive, creating a secure, "locked-down" environment for providing compute power. - The project is part of a larger trend of Decentralized Physical Infrastructure Networks (DePIN), a sector where Solana has become a leading blockchain. Major DePIN projects like Helium (wireless connectivity) and Render (GPU rendering) have already migrated to or built on Solana to leverage its speed and low transaction costs. - As of late February 2026, the Akash network had 58 active providers and a total network capacity of 226 GPUs. The Homenode initiative aims to significantly increase this supply side by tapping into the large, underutilized market of consumer-grade hardware. - An earnings estimate for Homenode suggests that at a 50% utilization rate, a provider running an NVIDIA RTX 4090 could generate enough revenue to cover the hardware's purchase cost in under 17 months.
