Vienna Reports Record Tourism for 2025

Vienna reported a new tourism record in 2025, with over 20 million overnight stays. The growth was primarily driven by international travelers, signaling a wider European tourism boom and the enduring appeal of heritage destinations.

- The record 20,065,000 overnight stays in 2025 represent a 6% increase compared to the previous record set in 2024. Accommodation revenue is also projected to set a new high, expected to surpass the €1.4 billion record from 2024, with figures from January to November 2025 already showing a 4% increase year-over-year. - International visitors accounted for about 83% of the overnight stays. Germany was the largest source market with 3,543,000 overnight stays, followed by Austria with 3,381,000. The United States was the third-largest market with 1,259,000 overnight stays and generated the most revenue in the five-star hotel category. - Significant growth was also seen from other international markets, including Canada (+17%), Spain (+7%), and Poland (+6%). While still below pre-pandemic levels, markets in Asia showed strong recovery, with overnight stays from China up by 22% and Japan by 24%. - This growth is part of Vienna's "Optimum Tourism" strategy, which focuses on attracting "desired guests"—those interested in culture and quality experiences—and aims for two-thirds of all visitors to fit this profile. The strategy also includes a goal for the meetings and conventions sector to account for one-tenth of all overnight stays. - The city's luxury accommodation offerings expanded in 2025, with the opening of the Mandarin Oriental in the former Vienna Commercial Court building. By the end of the year, Vienna had 26 luxury hotels, with about 60% of the city's total hotel bed capacity in the four- and five-star categories. - Looking ahead, Vienna is preparing to host the 70th Eurovision Song Contest in May 2026, which is expected to provide a significant economic boost. The city's theme for 2026 will be "Vienna Bites: Cuisine, Culture, Character," highlighting its culinary scene.
