Pat Riley's Armani Legacy

Pat Riley's sideline style became synonymous with the "Showtime" Lakers era of the 1980s, complementing the team's fast-breaking, flashy gameplay. He became a celebrity in his own right, known for his disciplined coaching philosophy which was reflected in his sharp, authoritative wardrobe. His players even gave him the nickname "GQ." The friendship between Riley and Giorgio Armani developed as both men reached the pinnacle of their professions in the early 1980s. In 1982, the same year Riley won his first NBA title as head coach, Armani appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, the first fashion designer to do so since 1957. The quintessential 1980s Armani power suit, famously worn by Richard Gere in the 1980 film *American Gigolo*, featured padded shoulders, a longer jacket cut, and high-waisted trousers. Riley became the unofficial ambassador for this look in the sports world, favoring neutral hues like ecru, bone, and navy. He was named NBA Coach of the Year three times throughout his career and was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2008. In February 2026, the Los Angeles Lakers unveiled a statue of Riley outside their arena. The bronze likeness depicts the legendary coach in one of his famous Giorgio Armani suits, standing between statues of "Showtime" pillars Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
