Pat Riley's Armani Legacy

NBA's Pat Riley's 1980s Giorgio Armani suits earned "Godfather" praise with vintage photos going viral and racking up 1.3K likes. The classic tailored looks showcase the timeless appeal of sharp suiting in sports leadership.

Pat Riley's sideline style became synonymous with the "Showtime" Lakers era of the 1980s, complementing the team's fast-breaking, flashy gameplay. His slicked-back hair and expensive suits were the perfect representation of the team's Hollywood image and 1980s excess and cunning. This persona earned him the nickname "The Godfather." Riley's preference for Giorgio Armani suits started a trend in the NBA, a league where coaches' attire was previously more casual. He became a celebrity in his own right, known for his disciplined coaching philosophy which was reflected in his sharp, authoritative wardrobe. His players even gave him the nickname "GQ." The friendship between Riley and Giorgio Armani developed as both men reached the pinnacle of their professions in the early 1980s. In 1982, the same year Riley won his first NBA title as head coach, Armani appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, the first fashion designer to do so since 1957. The quintessential 1980s Armani power suit, famously worn by Richard Gere in the 1980 film *American Gigolo*, featured padded shoulders, a longer jacket cut, and high-waisted trousers. Riley became the unofficial ambassador for this look in the sports world, favoring neutral hues like ecru, bone, and navy. Under Riley's leadership, the Lakers secured four NBA championships in the 1980s (1982, 1985, 1987, 1988). He was named NBA Coach of the Year three times throughout his career and was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2008. In February 2026, the Los Angeles Lakers unveiled a statue of Riley outside their arena. The bronze likeness depicts the legendary coach in one of his famous Giorgio Armani suits, standing between statues of "Showtime" pillars Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
