SoCal Linux Expo Spotlights Tech Careers
The Southern California Linux Expo (SCALE 23X), currently running in LA, is hosting a dedicated "Career Day" this weekend. The event provides direct networking opportunities with local employers and open-source maintainers, featuring tracks on developer tools, open-source AI, and cloud-native systems.
Now in its 23rd year, SCALE is North America's largest community-run open-source conference. The event has a history of attracting major technology companies, with past exhibitors including Google, Meta, and IBM. Beyond the career-focused sessions, the four-day conference hosts several co-located events relevant to modern software engineering, such as DevOpsDay LA and Cloud Native Days, alongside tracks on kernel development and AI. Last year's keynote was delivered by Microsoft Azure's CTO, Mark Russinovich. This is the fifth year for the dedicated Open Source Career Day. In 2025, the career event served over 650 participants through talks, hands-on workshops, and 50 individuals received personalized career consulting from industry professionals. Major tech companies like Google and Meta value open-source contributions as they demonstrate a candidate's ability to work on large-scale, collaborative projects. For new graduates, consistent and meaningful contributions can be a significant differentiator, potentially placing an applicant in the top 5% of candidates. Engineers at Google and Meta actively maintain and contribute to some of the most widely used open-source projects. Google spearheads technologies like Kubernetes and TensorFlow, while Meta is behind popular frameworks such as React and PyTorch. The event is situated within a thriving local job market, as the Los Angeles/Orange County area has the fifth-largest tech talent workforce in North America. The region also boasts the fourth-largest pool of AI specialists, a high-demand field in big tech. The average salary for a software engineer in Los Angeles ranges from $81,000 to $152,000. As of early March 2026, companies like Google were actively listing open positions for senior software engineers and solution architects in the Los Angeles area.
