Celtics Trade for Center Nikola Vucevic

The Boston Celtics are bulking up for a playoff run, reportedly trading Anfernee Simons and a second-round pick to the Chicago Bulls. In return, they'll receive veteran center Nikola Vucevic and a pick swap, adding size and experience to their frontcourt.

This trade provides significant financial flexibility for the Celtics, who shed Anfernee Simons' $27.7 million contract for Nikola Vucevic's expiring $21.5 million deal. The move drops Boston below the first luxury tax apron and is projected to reduce their tax penalty by more than $22 million. Boston addresses a critical need for frontcourt depth, a weakness exposed after losing Kristaps Porziņģis and Al Horford in the offseason. Vucevic, a 35-year-old two-time All-Star, brings veteran experience and averages nearly 17 points and 9 rebounds this season, bolstering the Celtics for a playoff run. For the Bulls, this signals a continued pivot toward a younger core. In acquiring the 26-year-old Simons, Chicago adds a dynamic scorer who was averaging 14.2 points off the bench for Boston while shooting 39.5% from three-point range. The deal had been in discussion for weeks, with Chicago initially seeking a first-round pick for Vucevic. Boston's persistence paid off as the Bulls eventually agreed to a framework involving a swap of second-round picks, with Boston sending the 32nd overall pick in the upcoming draft. Anfernee Simons was a key part of the offseason trade that sent Jrue Holiday to the Portland Trail Blazers. His departure leaves the Celtics with Derrick White and Payton Pritchard as the primary guards in their backcourt rotation. Vucevic's arrival marks a return to a more traditional center for Boston. His offensive skill set and ability to stretch the floor fit well with their current system. The Celtics had previously pursued Vucevic in a 2021 trade negotiation.
