Enverus Acquires SBS for AI-Driven Utility Planning

Energy data analytics firm Enverus is acquiring Spatial Business Systems (SBS) from an affiliate of Peak Rock Capital. The deal combines Enverus's analytics platform with SBS's expertise in utility engineering and automation to create an AI-powered solution for utility capital planning and grid modernization.

The acquisition comes as utilities face mounting pressure to upgrade aging infrastructure, with the American Society of Civil Engineers giving the U.S. energy grid a C- grade. This modernization is crucial to handle rising electricity demand from data centers and electrification, and to integrate intermittent renewable energy sources. Spatial Business Systems (SBS) specializes in software that creates "digital twins," or virtual models of physical utility networks, to automate and streamline the design and engineering process. Under Peak Rock Capital's ownership since 2022, SBS quadrupled its annual recurring revenue and more than doubled its team, driven by investments in AI-powered tools and expansion. Enverus, backed by private equity giant Blackstone, is a major player in energy data analytics, providing SaaS solutions to over 5,000 customers in 50 countries. The company has been actively expanding its portfolio to cover the entire energy value chain, from oil and gas to renewables and power analytics. The deal is part of a broader trend of applying AI and data analytics to solve complex grid planning challenges. Utilities are increasingly turning to technology to manage the immense complexity of two-way power flows from distributed resources like solar panels and to enhance predictive maintenance. Leading the newly combined efforts are Enverus CEO Manuj Nikhanj and SBS President Al Eliasen. Nikhanj, who stepped into the CEO role in July 2024, has emphasized the enormous growth potential in leveraging AI and widely adopted SaaS platforms within the energy sector. This strategic purchase by Enverus aims to create an end-to-end solution, connecting high-level capital planning with the granular, real-world engineering workflows managed by SBS's software. The goal is to accelerate project timelines and improve the quality of infrastructure designs for a more resilient and efficient power grid.
