ETS Launches AI Literacy Diagnostic for Teachers

Educational Testing Service (ETS) has launched Adapt AI, a new diagnostic tool linked to its Praxis exams to assess AI literacy among teachers. The move could foreshadow future AI competency requirements for teacher certification. The launch has also sparked debate regarding the construct validity of measuring AI competency through standardized assessments.

- The "Futurenav Adapt AI" assessment includes three modules: "Reflect," a survey of educator perceptions; "Reason," an adaptive situational judgment test using school-based scenarios; and "Apply," an interactive task where educators use AI to build a lesson plan. The tool measures four key areas: recognizing AI, evaluating AI-generated content, navigating AI ethically, and applying AI tools to daily tasks. - Adaptive learning systems frequently employ reinforcement learning (RL) to tailor educational content to individual student needs. These systems can create personalized learning paths by using a reward mechanism to optimize for knowledge retention and user satisfaction. - To model a student's evolving knowledge state, many intelligent tutoring systems use deep knowledge tracing (DKT). DKT models can leverage neural network architectures like LSTMs or Transformers to predict how a student will perform on future interactions based on their sequence of prior responses. - For content recommendation, some adaptive systems frame the problem using a multi-armed bandit (MAB) approach, which is a form of reinforcement learning. This allows the system to balance exploiting known, effective content with exploring new content to find potentially better recommendations for a learner. - In early literacy tutors, speech recognition technology provides real-time feedback by comparing a child's spoken words to the text and offering help when they falter. Modern speech recognition for children is specifically designed to account for the higher pitch of young voices, varied accents, and noisy classroom environments. [cite: 12
