Ethiopian Runner Ban Upgrades Australian Medal

Ethiopian runner Diribe Welteji has been banned for missing a drug test, a violation that overshadowed recent world championships. As a result of this ban, Australia's Georgia Griffith is set to receive the world indoor championship bronze medal after Welteji's results were annulled.

Diribe Welteji's two-year ban stems from a refusal to provide a doping sample to control officers on February 25, 2025. The Court of Arbitration for Sport ultimately imposed a two-year suspension, rather than the four years sought by the Athletics Integrity Unit, after determining she had acted negligently but not with intentional evasion. Language barriers between the doping control officers and her husband were considered a factor in the incident. The ban, which runs from July 2025 to June 2027, annuls all of Welteji's results from the date of the missed test. This includes the forfeiture of her silver medal from the 1500m at the 2025 World Athletics Indoor Championships in Nanjing, China. Her 1500m personal best of 3:51.44, which had ranked her eighth all-time, has also been nullified. With Welteji's disqualification, Great Britain's Georgia Bell will be upgraded from bronze to silver. This change promotes Australia's Georgia Griffith, who originally finished fourth, into the bronze medal position, securing her first individual global medal. Griffith is a two-time Olympian for Australia, having competed in the 1500m at both the Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 Games. She has a history of strong performances at major championships, including a ninth-place finish in the 1500m at the 2022 World Athletics Championships. The dispute over the missed test had already impacted Welteji's career, as she was provisionally suspended and missed the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo while the case was under appeal. An initial clearance by the Ethiopian National Anti-Doping Office was appealed by World Athletics to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, leading to the final ban.
