Wealthsimple Edges Out Questrade for New Grads

In the 2026 brokerage showdown for Canadian DIY investors, Wealthsimple is rated the top pick for new grads and tech professionals. Its zero-commission structure and user-friendly mobile interface for TFSAs and RRSPs give it an edge. Questrade is still favored for more advanced traders who require a wider range of asset classes and complex order types.

Wealthsimple's zero-commission trading on stocks and ETFs shook up the Canadian market, but as of early 2025, Questrade matched this offer, eliminating its own trading fees for stocks and ETFs. This move shifted the competition from pricing to the overall user experience and platform features. For U.S. equity trading, both brokerages charge a foreign exchange fee of around 1.5% for currency conversion. However, Questrade allows users to hold U.S. dollars in registered accounts like RRSPs and TFSAs, avoiding repeated conversion fees. Wealthsimple offers USD accounts to its Premium and Generation clients, which requires a minimum of $100,000 in assets to get the feature for free, otherwise it costs $10 a month. Questrade provides a more extensive range of investment products, including bonds, GICs, precious metals, and mutual funds, which are not available on Wealthsimple. Wealthsimple, on the other hand, is the only one of the two that offers cryptocurrency trading, with over 140 coins available through a separate account. For active and experienced traders, Questrade's IQ Edge desktop platform offers more advanced charting tools, Level 2 data, and more complex order types. Wealthsimple's platform is designed for simplicity and ease of use, making it popular with beginner investors, and it offers fractional share trading for Canadian securities. As assets grow, both platforms offer premium tiers. Wealthsimple's "Premium" and "Generation" tiers (for assets over $100,000 and $500,000, respectively) provide benefits like lower management fees, higher interest on cash balances, and dedicated financial planning. Wealthsimple Generation clients also gain access to private credit and private equity investing. Questrade offers advanced market data packages for a monthly fee. The "Real-Time Streaming" package costs $9.95 CAD per month, while the "Advanced Streaming" package is $44.95 USD per month, providing deeper market insights for serious traders. These fees are no longer rebated based on trading commissions since Questrade moved to a zero-commission model.
