OpenAI Closes $110B Round, Inks $50B Amazon Deal

OpenAI has officially closed its massive $110 billion funding round led by Amazon, Nvidia, and SoftBank, pushing its valuation to between $730–840 billion. In a parallel move, Amazon and OpenAI announced a $50 billion strategic partnership that makes AWS the primary cloud provider for OpenAI's enterprise services, cementing a powerful alliance to scale AI for corporations globally.

The $50 billion from Amazon will be delivered in two parts: an initial $15 billion, with an additional $35 billion to follow once certain conditions are met. This deal is a strategic move for Amazon Web Services, positioning it to better compete with Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud in the enterprise AI market. As part of the expanded partnership, AWS will be the exclusive third-party cloud provider for OpenAI Frontier, an enterprise platform for building and managing AI agents. OpenAI and AWS are also co-developing a "Stateful Runtime Environment" on Amazon Bedrock, which will allow AI agents to retain context and memory for ongoing workflows. This partnership includes a massive infrastructure commitment, with OpenAI agreeing to spend an additional $100 billion on AWS over eight years, expanding on a previous $38 billion deal. A key component is OpenAI's plan to use 2 gigawatts of Amazon's custom Trainium AI chips, supporting the development of a rival to Nvidia's dominant GPU ecosystem. Nvidia's $30 billion investment secures its role as a crucial hardware provider for OpenAI, which has committed to using Nvidia's upcoming Vera Rubin platform for next-generation AI infrastructure. This deal is structured so that much of Nvidia's investment will likely return as revenue from OpenAI's chip purchases, a model some analysts have called "circular financing." SoftBank's $30 billion contribution raises its total investment in OpenAI to $64.6 billion, giving it an approximate 13% stake in the AI leader. This move is part of CEO Masayoshi Son's long-term strategy to be at the forefront of the AI sector. The massive influx of capital is critical for OpenAI, which anticipates spending around $600 billion on computing power by 2030 to stay ahead of competitors like Google and Anthropic. The company's user base continues to grow rapidly, with over 900 million weekly active users, including 50 million paying consumer subscribers and 9 million paying business users.
