Ugandan President Pledges UGX 5B to Content Creators

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has pledged UGX 5 billion (approx. $1.3 million) to the nation's content creators. The announcement was made at his "Jazz with Jajja" cultural event, aimed at promoting Ugandan arts and the local creative economy.

The pledge was solicited by media personality Isaac Katende, popularly known as Kasuku, who spoke on behalf of content creators at the event held at the President's farm in Kisozi. The funds are intended to be channeled through a Savings and Credit Cooperative Organisation (SACCO) established by the creators to boost their operations. A follow-up meeting between the President and Kasuku was scheduled for the following week to finalize the implementation details. President Museveni described the work of content creators as a modern form of sales promotion that is crucial for advertising local products to both domestic and international markets. He stated that organized groups of creators who promote local goods would be seen as useful partners and would receive government support. The initiative is seen as a strategic move to engage with Uganda's youthful population, where digital platforms have a significant influence on public discourse. The "Jazz with Jajja" event was the second of its kind, organized by the President's daughter, Natasha Karugire Museveni, and designed as an informal dialogue on ideology, patriotism, and economic empowerment with "Gen Z and millennial participants". Attendees included social media influencers, musicians, and digital entrepreneurs. While the announcement was met with cheers at the event and online, some commentators have raised questions about the disbursement and management of the funds. This pledge is part of a broader government strategy of financial support through SACCOs, with the President having previously pledged funds to other groups, including ghetto youth and journalists in various regions.
