Concrete Truck Overturns in Boyle Heights

A concrete truck overturned on a freeway transition in Boyle Heights, Los Angeles. The accident caused significant traffic disruptions and lane closures. Authorities are investigating the cause as cleanup crews work to clear the scene.

The crash occurred just before 9:15 a.m. Saturday on the northbound 5 Freeway near Cesar Chavez Avenue. The truck went over the k-rail, leaving it dangling over the transition to the 10 Freeway and threatening the train tracks below. The driver was initially trapped inside the cab but was reported to be conscious and talking before being freed and evaluated by paramedics. Specialized LAFD Heavy Rescue and Urban Search and Rescue units were dispatched to the scene to assess the fall hazard and stabilize the vehicle. A SigAlert was issued at 9:45 a.m., shutting down all northbound lanes of the 5 Freeway and all westbound lanes of the 10 Freeway. The closures, which caused significant traffic backups on surrounding surface streets, remained in effect for over seven hours until just before 5 p.m. A third-party contractor was called in to perform the complex recovery operation, which involved pulling the heavy tractor-trailer back from the overpass and uprighting it. The spilled concrete load presented an additional hazard, as wet concrete can create slick road conditions and quickly harden into a physical obstruction. Freeway transitions are common locations for truck rollovers due to the physics involved. A truck's high center of gravity, especially when loaded with a shifting liquid like concrete, makes it susceptible to tipping on curves if the driver's speed is too high for the turn's radius. This specific interchange in Boyle Heights has seen other serious accidents on its transition roads, highlighting the challenges of navigating these complex freeway connections.
