Broadway Producer Makes Historic Impact

Tony-nominated producer Brian Anthony Moreland is making history on Broadway, with his work being celebrated not only for critical acclaim but also for advancing diversity and inclusion in theater production. Moreland's approach and recent successes are inspiring the next generation of producers and theater professionals.

Brian Anthony Moreland's recent production of "Othello," starring Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal, broke box office records, becoming the highest-grossing revival of a play in history. This success is part of a larger winning streak, with his revival of August Wilson's "The Piano Lesson" also becoming the highest-grossing revival of its season. He was the only Black lead producer on Broadway during the 2022-2023 season and his productions have grossed over $100 million. Moreland joins a very short list of Black producers who have worked on Broadway since Robert Cole first cast Black performers in 1898. Moreland's commitment to telling diverse stories is evident in his choice of projects. He was the lead producer of "Thoughts of a Colored Man," the first Broadway play to be written, directed, and lead-produced by Black artists, with a fully Black cast. It took five years to bring that play to the Broadway stage. Beyond his productions, Moreland actively works to foster a more inclusive industry. He serves on the Board of Governors of The Broadway League, where he co-chairs the Multicultural Task Force, and is a trustee for organizations like Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS and The American Academy of Dramatic Arts.
