Microsoft Deploys Autonomous AI Agent
Microsoft just rolled out Copilot Tasks, an autonomous AI agent that operates independently in the cloud. You give it a goal in plain English, and it breaks it down, executes the steps, and reports back — a significant shift from a simple assistant to a self-directed operator.
This latest iteration of Copilot marks a significant strategic shift for Microsoft, moving beyond conversational AI that merely answers queries to "agentic AI" that actively accomplishes tasks. The company has stated that while conversational chatbots were the first chapter of AI, autonomous agents that can execute multi-step actions are the second. Unlike previous versions of Copilot that run on a user's local device, Copilot Tasks operates on its own dedicated cloud-based computer and web browser. This allows it to work continuously in the background on scheduled or recurring assignments without impacting the user's own machine performance. Early use cases being tested in the initial research preview include generating daily email summaries with draft replies, tracking and booking apartment viewings, and transforming a syllabus into a structured study plan complete with practice tests. The system can also monitor hotel rates and automatically rebook if a better price becomes available. While the agent operates autonomously, Microsoft emphasizes that users retain final control. For critical decisions, particularly those involving financial transactions or sending communications, the agent is designed to pause and ask for user consent before proceeding. This move positions Microsoft in direct competition with other emerging autonomous agent platforms, such as OpenAI's agents and Google's Gemini Agent on Android. The feature is currently in a limited research preview, with a public waitlist available for those interested in trying it as access gradually expands.
